Sound for a birthday party — the complete guide

A birthday without music is just... a meeting. Whether you are turning 30, hosting a teenager's party, or arranging a children's birthday, good sound makes the whole difference. Here is how to pick the right setup.
An adult birthday (25-50 guests)
The classic milestone birthday in a flat, a shared venue or a garden. It usually runs the same way: guests arrive, people talk, people eat, someone gives a speech, and then there is dancing.
What do you need?
- Under 30 guests indoors: the small speaker package is perfect. Bluetooth from your phone, and the sound fills the room.
- 30-50 guests, or outdoors: the large speaker package with two 12" tops. Especially if there are speeches — add a wireless microphone and it plugs straight into the speaker.
A tip for the speeches: pause the phone, hand the birthday guest of honour the microphone, and let everyone hear every last embarrassing anecdote. A microphone makes speeches so much better.
A teenager's party
Teenagers have different expectations from the adults. They want loud music, bass and party lights. The large speaker package is the right choice here, together with our light package.
Tips:
- Let them make the playlist in advance
- The large package has the power to make it feel like a real party
- Combine it with LED lights and a fog machine — teenagers love it
- Remember to bring the volume down during dinner and the speeches
A children's birthday
For a children's party you do not need a big system. But a bit of music works wonders for games like musical chairs and dancing competitions.
What works:
- The small speaker package is plenty for a children's birthday
- A Bluetooth connection, so you can run the music from your phone
- Put on a "kids' disco" playlist — it is always a hit
- Go easy on the bass — small ears are sensitive
Indoors versus outdoors
Is the birthday going to be in the garden? Then read our guide to sound for a garden party for specific tips on outdoor speaker placement.
The short version:
- Indoors: the speaker can stand lower, and the walls help reflect the sound
- Outdoors: the speaker has to go on a stand, and you need more power (the large package)
Music tips for a birthday
- Make the playlist in advance. Avoid the awkward "who is in charge of the music" moment.
- Start gently. Lounge music while people arrive and eat.
- Build it up. Change gear after dessert — now it is a party.
- Keep a crowd-pleaser list ready. Songs everyone knows and can sing along to.
